Some of you may have noticed that Charley’s creative website www.charley-murrell.co.uk has been down for the last few months. Hit by hackers and other technical failures, however we’re pleased to say that it’s now been rebuilt and is looking great! It’s been rather nostalgic and inspiring having to repost all her old projects from over the years, igniting old images and ideas.
Looking back over Charley’s work, aside from the ideas represented one can see how well she constructs scenes, lighting and an overall aesthetic impact which has helped her build a career in commercial photography. Here’s a couple of highlights from the site.
This project looks at transgender people who explore multiple gender identities, positioning themselves as combination of masculine, feminine and androgynous in different spaces.
Began by looking into the effect that the multi-million pound toy industry is having on children, focusing at first specifically on gender roles and stereotypes within children’s adverts and products in children’s toyshops.
Charley has won numerous awards for the haunting vision of children, products and society that this series portrayed. She spent a number of years photographing many young aspiring models, Trisha bellow is three years old and Natasha is six.
Charley hasn’t worked that much in video, however there was a short while where she was experimenting with a combination of photo-montage and video to create what are often called photofilms or in the past photo-roman. This piece made as part of the Child’s Play project is mostly video interviews with children aspiring to be models and their parents.
